Float is a multifunctional element of equipment. It is not only a signal of bait but also helps to make a long throw, control the depth, study the bottom topography. If you react to the play of the float and the hook is made in time, the fish will perfectly “sit” on the hook. Experienced fishermen, by the nature of the bite of the float, determine the type of “biting” fish and correctly build up a bucket. Types of floats for fishing should be selected according to the fishing conditions.
Structurally, all floats consist of an antenna, body, and keel. On the body, there are one or two rings for the passage of the line. The keel is needed to keep the float upright at all times. On the keel, there are 2 or 3 casing pieces. The antenna has a certain bright coloring to be noticeable from a distance.
TYPES OF FISHING FLOATS BY COLOR AND SIZE
The thickness of the float depends on the throwing distance. The farther the casting, the larger the diameter should be. It is generally accepted that for every 5 meters you cast, the diameter should increase by 0.5 mm. For casting at long distances, antennas with an extension on the tip are excellent. For bottom fishing, it is better to choose a float model with an extension in the central part. Models with thin tips are considered the most sensitive to the bite, they are used for small baits, and thick ones for large baits. Long antennas are designed for the match, rod method of float fishing, and short antennas for fishing in the water column.
The color of the antenna is selected according to the principle – a sharp contrast with the color of the water in the pond. Also, the choice of top color depends on the degree of light, the duration of fishing, and the distance of throwing. For example, red is effective on a sunny day, yellow will be noticeable in the early morning and on cloudy days, and glowing, luminescent antennas – a great option for night fishing.
It is important to note that there are also shadeless models (dibber). In the manufacture of float models, Dibber has first applied technology processing air bubbles, they are used for fishing in shallow water, showed themselves in carp fishing, as well as bream and crucian carp.
This parameter determines the sensitivity and stability of the float, and the form is chosen according to the method of fishing.
- The shape of the olive is considered universal, the float is used in different fishing conditions, have good stability in the wind and the impact of water;
- with the body in the form of a ball show themselves well in the presence of a strong wind, belong to the universal, used for fishing in reservoirs with intense and calm currents, in calm and windy weather;
- the drop shape has the center of gravity displaced to the bottom, works with waves, is suitable for float rods of all types, effective for fishing in deep water;
- the inverted drop shape is suitable for fishing in deep water, with the presence of current, for bologna tackle, for the tasks of fishing in the wire;
- spindle shape, ideal for fishing at depths up to 3 meters, the most effective in rippling water, capricious weather with a straight body, used in calm weather in reservoirs with a shallow depth of up to 2 meters – lakes, ponds;
- Flat float, disc-shaped – stable when catching on the current, characterized by accurate registration of bites at a strong current, used when fishing with spinning tackle and a fishing rod with a reel.
Amateur – characterized by high carrying capacity. They are used in all conditions, in standing water, and the current. They have one attachment point. Their disadvantage – insufficient sensitivity for registering bites of cautious fish.
Sports – control rigging at any depth and conditions. They are characterized by high sensitivity. As a rule, the carrying capacity of sports floats does not exceed 4 grams. They are used for fishing in reservoirs with standing water.
Bologna – has a spherical body and a hollow antenna. Suitable for energetic hooks, as the line passes through the antenna. The carrying capacity of bologna floats is up to 12 g. They prove excellent when catching fish on the current.
Match floats have a built-in body and are characterized by excellent aerodynamic characteristics. They are excellent for long-distance throwing. They can be mounted in stationary and sliding versions.
Flat – are used for rod tackle and fishing on a strong current. Such models may have different shapes and carrying capacities up to 15 grams.
CHOOSING FLOAT FOR CERTAIN FISHING CONDITIONS
Types of fishing floats for fast rivers flat models are preferred. For large rivers and fishing in calm water, experienced fishermen recommend drop-shaped variants. For fishing large fish that do not approach the shore, hull and rod wagglers are used. For long throws, it is worth choosing a spindle-shaped float, which gives a good sail when throwing. If the weather is windy, the presence of feathering on the float will stabilize the flight. As for weight, in terms of range, the float should weigh 6 – 20 grams.
The most stable is considered float, which has a lower center of gravity, the body spherical, and the keel elongated. But the sensitivity of such options only when taking a nibble is on the rise. The most sensitive floats are elongated, needle-shaped, but they are significantly inferior to spherical floats in terms of stability. Therefore, in the conditions of a quiet current, windless weather, it is better to use the float “needle”. In more difficult conditions, emphasize the stability of the float.
Load capacity determines the operating limit of the float. This is an important parameter for the range of the bait, for fishing at depths, quick delivery to the bottom of the bait, as well as for casting control. It is important to choose the right float capacity because a heavy float will be less sensitive.
