Skimboarding is a boardsport in which a person rides on a small, rectangular board called a skimboard across the water’s surface to meet an incoming wave, then uses the momentum of the wave to glide along its face. It is similar to surfing, but without the use of a surfboard. Instead, skimboarders use their own body weight and momentum to glide across the water’s surface.

Skimboarding originated in Southern California in the early 1900s as a way for surfers to stay active when there were no waves. The first skimboards were made out of wood and were often used as training tools for young surfers. As the sport grew in popularity, people began to experiment with different materials and designs, and today there are a variety of skimboards available on the market.

Materials Needed:

  • A skimboard
  • A body of water with a sandy bottom (waves are not necessary)

Instructions:

  1. Choose a good spot to skimboard. Look for a place with a sandy bottom and no rocks or shells that could hurt you if you fall. The beach is a great place to skimboard, but any shallow body of water will do.
  2. Get your board wet. Walk out into the water until it’s deep enough to cover the board. Then, lay the board down on the water and let it float.
  3. Wait for a wave. Once your board is floating, wait for a small wave to come along. When you see a wave approaching, stand up on your board and get ready to ride.
  4. Paddle hard and fast. As the wave approaches, paddle as hard as you can to catch it. You want to be going fast enough that you can glide on top of the wave when it hits your board.
  5. Stand up and ride. When the wave hits your board, stand up and start riding it like you would a surfboard. Lean into turns and enjoy the ride!
  6. Get off your board. When you’re ready to stop riding, simply hop off your board and let it float away. You can then swim back to shore and start all over again.
