How to Choose a Dive Mask

To easily navigate the variety of dive masks and choose what you need, pay attention to the key points that we will list in this article.

1. The number of lenses.

First, when choosing a mask, I recommend deciding and choosing between two-lens or one-piece glass mask options. Mono glass (one lens) is excellent for shallow recreational diving, it provides the best visibility and is an optimal option for beginners. The double glass (two lenses) is suitable for beginners and professionals. This version of the mask is generally considered more robust and suitable for deeper and more serious dives.

2. Fitting your mask

Secondly, the mask has to fit your face shape perfectly that’s why the fitting is a must. It is necessary to do an easy but obligatory procedure when choosing the model you like: it is necessary to remove or “shave” the hair from your forehead and slightly press the mask to your face, it should fit evenly and tightly. If the mask does not press on the bridge of your nose and the lower part of the skirt does not press on the nasolabial cavity, you will feel comfortable in this mask during the whole period of your diving. If the mask does not pass this test and falls off your face when you inhale or sit uncomfortably on your face, then it is not an option and you should consider another model.

3. The Volume or the Underpouch Space.

The under-mask space is the distance between the diver’s face on one side and the mask on the other. This space is filled with air. It is important to realize that the larger the volume, the greater the lifting force of the mask and therefore it is more difficult to hold the body horizontally or with the head down, it may seem like a small thing but it is a fact. At the same time, masks with more under-mask space are suspected of less visibility, so it is wise to choose a mask with less under-mask space.

4. Performance.

The diving mask can be different shapes and colors, the wealth of choice, as they say, to taste and color. But one thing remains unchanged, the silicone used in the mask to pick up the color of the eyes, teeth, shoes, etc. will not work, it will be either transparent or black. The criterion of choice is rather a matter of taste, but it is desirable to choose the black color of silicone because it is the best. The advantage of transparent silicone is that it slightly increases visibility, but at the same time contributes to the glare on the sight glass, which can interfere with your comfort. This is the main disadvantage that overrides all the pros of a mask with clear silicone.

5. Mask headband and neck strap.

It seems to be a simple thing, but there are nuances. Any diving mask has a headband with a split in the middle part, as this variant provides a more secure fixation on the head. In addition, we recommend using the neoprene headband for the mask that is attached to the strap, which adds comfort when putting on, and a tighter fit during the dives. Also of great importance when choosing a diving mask is the convenience of the mechanism for adjusting the strap tension. Modern mechanisms allow the final adjustment of the mask already worn by pressing the strap retainers and moving it in the right direction. When adjusting the strap it is not necessary to overtighten the strap to the point where your eyes rest against the glass otherwise you will scare all the fish away during the dive and after the dive, a trail of your mask will remain on your face for at least 2-3 hours.

6. Dive masks with dioptres.

In case the diver has vision problems, you should choose a mask with dioptres or with the option to install dioptric lenses. The use of dioptric lenses is only possible with the two-lens models. Single-lens models do not have a lens inserted. Masks with dioptres are not rare anymore, the biggest choice is offered by the manufacturer TUSA, so if you have problems with the vision I advise you to check if it is possible to change the lenses and to buy both, mask and lenses. The change does not require any special qualifications, and in the article “Mask Lens Replacement” we will look at this procedure in detail. Please note when choosing a lens for your mask that water gives you a correction of 0.5. So, if your vision is -2, you should choose lenses with correction – 1.5.

7. Cost

When the stage of the fitting is passed, when the most comfortable model is chosen, you can pay attention to the price. You should keep in mind that the cost of the mask is the last factor to consider and in some cases, the cheapest model might fit better, but in practice, it is often the other way around.
